Getting right to it, size does matter when it comes to furniture.  In styling a large open space, choose larger furniture pieces that fit the scale of the room. Sofas should be comfy and durable, its going to get a lot of use.  If you have tall or vaulted ceilings, tall bookcases or decorative screens create faux walls to delineate certain areas. Pairs of bookcases, can be placed back-to-back and positioned as a room divider (be sure to attach them firmly together at the back for safety and stability).

Large upholstered ottomans work great as movable seating, foot rests and coffee or display tables.  I like to choose furniture items like ottomans in fun colors or patterns because they are easily changed or moved.  Each seating area should have tables next to or near the side of chairs so you always have a place to set a glass, phone or book.

Make sure there are lamps in reading areas — overhead lighting is not conducive for reading, but task lighting is perfect at table height and creates an opportunity to add more color, texture or fabric accents.  To keep the space from visually expanding, avoid decorating with large mirrors and glass-topped tables.
