How To Style Big Rooms & Open Spaces: Part II

Color Coding & Flooring Solutions

Welcome back!  If you missed the first part of How To Style Big Rooms & Open Spaces Part I:  Focus on Function, click here.  Up next is one of my favorite elements of interior design, COLOR!!!

Color is an inexpensive and simple option to instantly and dramatically change any room!  Particularly, color can effectively separate and define specific areas in a large room.  Bright or darker colors on all walls can make the room seem smaller.  In an oversized room, choose a focal wall (or two) to introduce brighter or deeper tones of a color you love but would hesitate to try in a small space or all over. In some cases, painting the ceiling a rich, deep tone will visually bring it lower.

Play with the power of color, it makes a difference!  A final thought on making paint, walls and color pop is to consider adding wide moldings to draw the eye down from a high ceiling.

And speaking of looking down!!!  (the ideal segue) When it comes to flooring, unite the different zones with area rugs in a similar tone to keep the eye flowing from space to space.  A base of hardwood or laminate wood flooring ties the individual zones together.  I am traditionally a dark-tone wood flooring kinda girl, but the latest trends boast beautiful woods in lighter shades which don’t show dirt as easily as my dark floors.  If a kitchen is involved, go for tile that mimics wood flooring, loads of options are available online!  If you’re chomping at the bit for more, visit me on my social media channels!
