8 Easy Home Decor Tips To Try

I was recently asked what were some of my favorite tips that I use time and again when styling an interior space.  It got me to thinking about past rooms and clients who achieved the most warm and inviting spaces.  The next couple of blog posts are dedicated to sharing my favorite Interior Styling tips for making any space inviting and beautifully functional.

Photograph your room in sections. Seeing the space in a photograph provides you with a more objective look, like seeing it in a magazine. Your eye becomes more critical, and needed adjustments become more obvious.

Connect spaces with color.  When styling multiple rooms, especially open spaces, use a color thread throughout to bring cohesion to connecting space
s. It isn’t necessary to use the exact same color in each room.  Applying layers of the same color, varying the hue and texture, makes the room feel more natural and less intentional.

A Splash of red. You don’t have to be a fan of red to appreciate it in tiny doses. Just a hint of this peppery hue is enough to grab attention and add a little interest to the space.  A subtle consideration is a wall print that has red lettering.

Add flower power.  Don’t get me wrong, buying fresh flowers every week gets pretty expensive.  However, a group of one kind of inexpensive blooms, such as carnations, makes a refreshing, soothing impact and leaves you with dollars to spare.

Gather small accessories “tchotchkes” in one place and feature them as a collection. Knickknacks scattered around a room look more like clutter and tend to lose their importance. When grouped together they make a statement and become more relevant to the homeowner.  Besides, collections are cool when you can admire them in one place.

Know that less really is more. Be careful not to over-accessorize.  It’s easy to go pillow crazy! (been there done that, I’m just sayin’) You need not have an accessory in every corner of a space, especially when its functional needs are simple.  For example you could paint wall-mounted magazine files the same color as the wall to camouflage their appearance.  Try to keep accessories minimal as not to diminish the beauty of the larger statement pieces in the room.

Try before you buy! Yes, you can do this with home decor!  Create your desired vignette in the store before you bring it home.(I do this all the time in HomeGoods)  Auditioning potential purchases helps to save time standing in line at the returns desk.  And, if you have doubts or questions about a proposed look, you can easily get an experienced store associate to give his or her expert opinion.

Let YOU shine through.   Your home should be about filling it with the stuff you enjoy and enjoy doing.  Create vignettes that reflect your personality, not a showroom.  There’s nothing wrong with mimicking a look you love, I grab inspiration from just about every store I go into, but be sure to add personal touches that give clues about who you are, not just the store you shopped at.

Styling a room is a lot like styling your wardrobe.  Mix things ups, layer and put together a look that expresses who you are and that makes you feel comfortable!  Enjoy Home!
